Computer gamers less likely to go to university

"Frequently playing computer games appears to reduce a teenager's chances of going to university, while reading enhances the likelihood that they will go on to study for a degree, according to Oxford University research that tracked 17,000 people born in 1970.

Reading was also linked to careers success, as the research finds 16-year-olds who read books at least once a month were significantly more likely to be in a professional or managerial job at 33 than those who didn't read books at all."

Like it or not. What is the 'Plus One' relevance?

If we have Facebook Like buttons, we may also would like to tag as Plus One, some of our web experiences. Do we?? Definitely, yes!

Google announced a new social feature to its search service, adding a button to allow users to recommend sites and share those recommendations with their friends.

"It’s called +1 — the digital shorthand for “this is pretty cool.” To recommend something, all you have to do is click +1 on a webpage or ad you find useful. These +1’s will then start appearing in Google’s search results."

Let's play this new game. The world wide web is getting more and more social and a single click will be no trouble for anybody. Will it be relevant? let's click and see.

Top Reasons Why Consumers Unsubscribe Via E-Mail, Facebook & Twitter

More than 90% of consumers unsubscribe, “unlike” or stop following brands because of too frequent, irrelevant or boring communications, according to a report by social media and e-mail marketing services company ExactTarget.

Here are a few key findings from the study:

  • 91% of consumers have unsubscribed from opt-in marketing e-mails.
  • 77% of consumers report being more cautious about providing their e-mail address to companies versus last year.
  • 81% of consumers have either “unliked” or removed a company’s posts from their Facebook News Feed.
  • 71% of consumers report being more selective about “liking” a company on Facebook than they were last year.
  • 51% of consumers expect that a “like” will result in marketing communications from brands, while 40% do not believe it should result in marketing communications.
  • 41% of consumers have “unfollowed” a company on Twitter.
With 95% of U.S. online consumers using e-mail (and 93% of U.S. online consumers being subscribers to at least one opt-in e-mail per day), the e-mail findings are particularly important for marketers hoping to remain in good standing with their audiences via e-mail.

Again…. “The Web is dead”

Not only are tablets the future, but "We think the Web is dead." It may always be there, but it's not the future. Nor are e-readers-devices like Amazon's Kindle. "There's one advantage to those things and that's that they can be read on the beach. That's not enough."

If the Web is dead, what's rising is "the "app Internet." And that's where media companies need to focus themselves strategically. The need to de-emphasize their HTML skills and become app-Internet developers-for tablets and smart phones alike. "That's the most important thing”

Internet "kill switch"

Egypt has pulled the plug on the entire Internet for its citizens.

Such a flagrant violation of communications--possible only in the less free corners of the world, right? But since last summer, when a Senate bill was introduced by Joe Lieberman, the US has been considering an Internet "kill switch" of its own.

Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!

Larry Page will replace Eric Schmidt in an unexpected move as Google announced far better than expected profits.

The company said Page would take over from 4 April when Eric Schmidt will become executive chairman "focusing externally on deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships".

Schmidt posted the moves some minutes ago, at Google's official blog:

Larry will now lead product development and technology strategy, his greatest strengths, and starting from April 4 he will take charge of our day-to-day operations as Google’s Chief Executive Officer. In this new role I know he will merge Google’s technology and business vision brilliantly. I am enormously proud of my last decade as CEO, and I am certain that the next 10 years under Larry will be even better! Larry, in my clear opinion, is ready to lead.
Sergey has decided to devote his time and energy to strategic projects, in particular working on new products. His title will be Co-Founder. He’s an innovator and entrepreneur to the core, and this role suits him perfectly.
As Executive Chairman, I will focus wherever I can add the greatest value: externally, on the deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership that are increasingly important given Google’s global reach; and internally as an advisor to Larry and Sergey.

Why I don’t use facebook? Too retro for my taste.

Facebook is retro because, like AOL, it's retro by its nature. It's a closed system. Some people like a closed comfy system and others don't. I, for one, don't. If I want a personal webpage with all sorts of information about myself, I'll go to Wordpress.com and make one. By doing this, I don't turn over any data, control, or information to an onerous third party to sell, use, or exploit. I can close down the site when I want. I can say what I want. I can pretty much do whatever.

PwC: G-7 Will Be Overtaken by Emerging Economies in 2032

The combined gross domestic product of the seven biggest developing economies will exceed that of the G-7, the world’s largest industrialized markets, in 2032 using projected market exchange rates, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP said in a report released in London today. China will overtake the U.S. as the world’s largest economy also in that year, it said.
...
In 2009, the combined GDP what PricewaterhouseCoopers calls the Emerging Seven of China, India, Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, Mexico, and Turkey was the equivalent of 35 percent of the G-7. By 2020, E-7 GDP will increase to about 70 percent of the G-7’s, and by 2050 it will be 64 percent larger, according to the report.

Also in 2032, Brazil’s economy will overtake Germany’s in size, while India will eclipse Japan in 2028, the accountancy firm said.
